On another hot and sunny day of this relentlessly warm summer, the Martyrs of Merthyr Town defeated City of Liverpool FC in the 2018 version of the Supporters Direct Shield. In a thoroughly entertaining game of six goals, at least two of which would have graced any World Cup Final, the hosts ran out 4-2 winners.
Nevertheless, the visitors from Liverpool produced a fine display despite their position several divisions below the hosts and missing a number of key players who were unable to make the trip. Those that did make the trip, a large and noisy contingent enjoying the excellent South Wales hospitality, thoroughly enjoyed their day and can look forward to a fine season ahead should their team's performance match that on show on Saturday.
Indeed, the "Purps" were ahead after 18 minutes and still in the game even when Merthyr scored their fourth goal in the 61st minute before the game finally meandered to a conclusion due to a series of substitutions and the effects of a hot July day..
All that remained at the end of a fine game was for Supporters Direct Vice Chairman, Tim Hartley, to award the SD Shield to Ashley Evans, the Martyrs' captain, and for those remaining at the ground to enjoy the continuing warmth of the local hospitality.
All in all, it was a fine day enjoyed by everyone!
